Visibility to Heath Career Pathways a Focus at INFORM® Journeys and the Classroom of the Future Foundation Networking Event

San Diego’s booming heath industry and the importance of creating a regional approach to connecting education to the world of work a hot topic.

SAN DIEGO – May 15, 2017 – Local education and business leaders joined forces for a discussion on expanding career pathway opportunities for San Diego students and achieving collective social impact in the health innovation economy. The event addressed the need for a regional approach to connecting education to the world of work, and how San Diego’s nationally recognized heath industry can play a strong role in doing so.

The Health Industry is one of the fastest growing and one of the largest employers in the region. San Diego is considered a leader in health innovation due in part to its “Live Well, San Diego” initiative, a 10-year plan to build a healthy, safe and thriving community. The region is home to 25 hospitals and more than 26,000 unique healthcare and social assistance establishments that employ more than 140,000 people. In addition, San Diego healthcare companies provide more than $6.9 billion in wages annually.

During an interactive discussion facilitated by Rob Atterbury from ConnectEd, attendees were able to engage with representatives from Palomar Heath and Sharp Healthcare and hear how their heath pathways work at Del Lago Academy and Heath Sciences High and Middle College have had a profound effect on each campus. Student representatives from each school were able to bring real life perspective to the discussion and highlight the tangible results this pathway curriculum has had on each of their lives.

Included in the event was a demonstration of the Journeys platform, which will help students navigate to their college, certification and career destinations. “The Journeys platform will help students visualize their career path and support their skills and interests,” said Peter Sibley, who has led the Journeys effort. “We believe Journeys is a game changer when it comes to providing students and educators the support they greatly need for educational and career pathway decision-making. This event has only heightened those beliefs.”

“We are thrilled to showcase the successful work-based learning partnerships at Del Lago Academy and Health Sciences High and Middle College,” said James Wright, Chief Executive Officer of the Classroom of the Future Foundation. “If we want our health innovation economy to be strong and our workforce to be skilled we must replicate these types of partnerships across our County, and inspire local students to pursue opportunities in healthcare and life science industries.”
