• Breakout Session A: Room 133: “The World of Work Initiative in Cajon Valley Union School District”: Moderated by Ed Hidalgo, Cajon Valley Union School District
  • This session will provide an overview of the world of work initiative in Cajon Valley Union School District and the four different levels of experiences that they are providing their students. Attendees will hear from Ed Hidalgo and Dr. David Miyashiro, Superintendent, Cajon Valley Union School District.
• Breakout Session B: Room 131: “The Importance of Teacher Externships and Job Shadowing: Bringing Relevance into the Classroom”: Moderated by Nancy Farnan, Professor Emeritus, College of Education, San Diego State University
  • This session will provide examples of different success stories of teacher externship experiences, the barriers and opportunities associated with these experiences, and ways to prepare our teachers for this new paradigm. Attendees will hear from Nancy Farnan, San Diego State University, Rob Atterbury, ConnectEd, Jewyl Clark, San Diego County Office of Education, and Richard Oka, Clairemont High School.

• Breakout Session C: Room 116: “Engaging the Business Community in Work-Based Learning Opportunities for San Diego Students”: Presented by Our City San Diego and Moderated by Jack Crittenden, Editor-in-Chief, Our City San Diego
  • This session will provide an overview of the regional One San Diego Skills for Success Initiative, the partners involved, and its impact thus far. Attendees will understand how we can close the 143,000 work-based learning opportunity gap in San Diego high schools moving forward and how businesses can get involved after this summit in supporting K-12 education in San Diego. Attendees will hear from Tia Anzellotti, United Way of San Diego County, Ashley Packard, Junior Achievement San Diego County, Karmin Noar, San Diego Workforce Partnership, and Brian Butler, San Diego County Office of Education.

    • This session will provide an overview of a unique partnership between Journeys and Bonsall USD to connect the classroom to career exploration and enhance the student experience.

Rob is the Director for Regional Linked Learning Support for Southern California, for ConnectEd: The California Center for College and Career, and also serves as a district coach for the California District Initiative for Linked Learning. Prior to joining ConnectEd in 2009, Rob spent 28 years with San Diego Unified School District as a teacher, Program Manager, Director of the School-to-Career program, and Director in the Office of Secondary School Innovation. He also spent a year and a half as the High School Transformation Associate Superintendent for Atlanta Public Schools. In these roles, Rob has been involved in transforming large comprehensive high schools into small, career-themed schools, career academies, and/or smaller learning communities. Rob is passionate about improving instruction through real-world standards-based curriculum designed to engage students, providing every student with a work-based learning experience, and supporting districts and schools in this pursuit.

Rob is a graduate of San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Studies and a Master’s degree in Education Administration from United States International University. He holds various teaching credentials and a Clear Administrative Services Credential from San Diego State University.

Dr. Gothold began his career with the Los Angeles County Office of Education, working with adjudicated youth in the county’s Division of Alternative Education as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal. He later worked in the county’s Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment program, mentoring new teachers, authoring curricula, and training educators in instructional strategies and ways to integrate technology with content standards.

He then worked at Montebello Unified School District as director of secondary education, where he fostered a professional environment that supported increased academic performance, improved attendance, and integrated interventions into the district’s core curriculum. There, he also worked for more than two years to create the Applied Technology Center, a non-traditional high school that touted five career education academies, fully integrated with core academics.

Dr. Gothold then joined Lynwood Unified as the Chief Academic Officer, and in 2013 he was named district superintendent. Lynwood Unified serves a student population that is 96 percent students of color, with more than 94 percent of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches. He crafted a comprehensive professional development plan for all teachers and administrators to improve the district’s instructional program and initiated the Achieving Greatness Strategic Plan, which focused on making systemic changes to improve student outcomes.

His collaborative work with the Lynwood Unified Board of Education, teachers, staff, parents, and community resulted in dramatic increases in student achievement. In 2017, the district was one of only three in the nation – and the only one in California – to be selected as a 2017 AP District of the Year for simultaneously and continuously raising the number of students taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes and improving passing rates on AP exams.

Since 2010-11, the graduation rates at both Lynwood comprehensive high schools have increased by more than 23 percentage points, with a current rate of 93 percent. The district has created more advanced placement courses, career technical pathways, and support programs to ensure that students succeed in college and career.
